Commodores Cup

The Commodores Cup was my fourth regatta in the Star Class.  Saturday came with less then ideal conditions and the fleet was postponed at the dock.  Racing was eventually canceled for the day at 2:30 PM.  On Sunday it looked like more of the same conditions until around 10 am when the wind filled in to a steady 10 to 13 knots from the North West.  This was great and we were able to get started on time.  Things worked out in our favor on the first beat.  Sailing up the right side of the course paid off and we rounded the weather mark in 1st.  John MacCausland was close on our heels on the downwind and we ended up spliting gates at the leeward mark.  I did an awful job exiting the rounding and lost two places.  We rounded the top mark in fourth and held this position to the finish.  Race two I made a poor start and didnt keep clear of a leeward boat in the process.  So shortly after the start we were doing circles and starting in last place.  We managed to climb back into 12th by the end of the race.

Race 3 was a five leg race.  After my bad start at the boat and the wind being as far right as Stew and I had seen all day, we chose to start further down the line and head out on starboard in a clean lane.  The boat was agian very crowed and we got off the line in a clean lane to leeward of John MacCausland.  The wind eventually shifted to the left and the whole fleet tacked to port.  John had a better start then us and was now to leeward of us and advanced, 8217 was on our hip and ahead in the left shift.  The left shift held for the majority of the beat.  We took a small hitch on starboard that put us the furtherest left and helped us push the 4th place boat back a little.  We rounded in 3rd close behind USA 8217.  MacCausland was in 1st and was able to extend.  We over took USA 8217 at the leeward gate and held the second place position for the rest of the upwind and next downwind leg downwind.  On the last beat for the finish we followed MacCausland around the left gate with Augie Diaz close behind us and Jud Smith going around the right gate.  All the boats tacked to starboard.  Augie Diaz did the best job and footed out ahead of us.  I got a little rattled and tacked to port the wind kept going left and we lost out to Jud and Augie again finishing 4th.

Our 4, 12, 4 score line was good enough for 5th overall.  Still lots of room for improvement, next up is a small star event in San Diego next weekend.
