Chicago Mackinac Race 2010

Posted: 8/4/2010

For this second year in a row Runaway finished 2nd in the Turbo Class of the Chicago Mackinac Race.  This year the boat was chartered and skippered by Bruce and Glenn Burton from Bayview Yacht Club.  We had good racing with some of the other boats in the Turbo section.   We sailed the majority of the race within sight of the Transpac 52 Natalie J and the Southern Cross 52 Vincitore.  We managed to stay in contact with both boats through saturday night's upwind conditions passing Vincitore Sunday morning and then reelling in  Natalie J through the Manitou islands and extending our lead to the finish.  There was a bit of bad luck near the finish when the breeze shut down for us about 2 miles away from the finish and it took roughly 5 hours to inch our way to the finish line.  The picture below taken shortly after the finish shows the glassy conditions.

Lucky for us the boats behind us also had similair conditons and the next boat in our class did not finish for over 2 hours.  Over the past two years for 2 different crews and Skippers the Andrews 70 Runaway has been the best preforming boat in the Chicago Mackinac Race Turbo Class.  She is currently for sale.  For more information on the boat please click the link  a full survey and additional photos can be provided upon request.
